Mrs. Irene Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe, NDP):

Mr. Speaker, it is my privilege to present petitions on behalf of the hard-working men and women of the CAW who call upon the government to cancel negotiations for a free trade agreement with Korea and to instead develop a new automotive trade policy that would require Korea and other offshore markets to purchase equivalent volumes of finished vehicles and parts as a condition of continued access to our market.

Mrs. Irene Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe, NDP):

Mr. Speaker, I have a petition signed by more than 550 constituents who call upon the Government of Canada, the Prime Minister and the housing minister to ensure that the partners for the access and identification project, PAID, which provides critical assistance to homeless persons, and individuals and families at risk of homelessness in obtaining and replacing identification documents, retain its funding and that the government extend the federal homelessness funding for another five years.

Mrs. Irene Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe, NDP) moved for leave to introduce Bill C-382, An Act to provide for secure, adequate, accessible and affordable housing for Canadians.

She said: “Mr. Speaker, the growing issue of homelessness and inadequate housing in this country is of profound concern. With billions of dollars in surplus there is no reason why any person should be faced with the reality of having nowhere to go, no place to live this winter. Yet, for more than 200,000 Canadians homelessness is a fact of life.”

“The purpose of this bill is to respect the dignity and worth of all women, children and men in Canada by protecting their human rights for the provision of adequate, accessible and affordable housing and security.”

Mr. Speaker, I present these petitions on behalf of the hard-working men and women of the Canadian auto workers who are asking the government to cancel negotiations on a free trade agreement with Korea and to develop a new automotive trade policy that would require Korea and other offshore markets to purchase equivalent volumes of finished vehicles and auto parts from North America as a condition of their continued access to our market.

I concur with these petitions.

M-164 — May 8, 2006 — Mrs. Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe) — That, in the opinion of the House, the government should address its commitments to the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) by: (a) increasing the budget of Status of Women Canada to $100 million; (b) providing both project and core funding to women’s equality-seeking groups (c) reviewing annually the effectiveness of programmes; and (d) ensuring that all of the above is reported annually to Parliament.

M-163 — May 8, 2006 — Mrs. Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe) — That, in the opinion of the House, the government should work with the Ford Motor Company to keep the Talbotville plant running two lines by: (a) investing in an incentive package for Ford to turn the plant into a flexible manufacturing plant; and (b) ensuring that the above agreement is reported to Parliament.
