Hurricane Ida El-Salvador Relief Effort

Dear Constituents,

For many years the Latin American community in London has warmly welcomed me to their events and supported my efforts to make London and Canada a better place. Now the community is engaging in an effort to assist victims of Hurricane Ida in El-Salvador and I wanted to share information about this effort with you.

This is to inform you that we are working to raise funds to support the survivors of the Hurricane IDA and contribute to the efforts of reconstruction in El Salvador and your help is needed. As you may be aware, on November 7 and 8, 2009 El Salvador was unexpectedly hit by Hurricane
Ida, resulting in more than 355 mm of rain, lethal flooding and landslides.

The Salvadoran government estimates that at least 200 people were killed, more than 17, 000 people are in shelters and at least 100 people still missing, many of whom were buried in mudslides. This type of destruction has also created an intense food shortage in the country, as rural livelihoods were literally swept away.

The recently elected FMLN president Mauricio Funes has declared a National Emergency, has been working very hard through interministerial efforst and community organizations, and has appealed for international support.

The Movimiento Farabundista of London Ontario has responded to this international call for justice and is joining SalvAide and other organizations in Canada and in El Salvador in its emergency and reconstruction efforts.

We are committed to supporting the reconstruction efforts, particularly for the rural poor. This type of support will include support to local schools, health centres, and agricultural rehabilitation.
