Irene's Posts

OTTAWA - Yesterday the Conservatives attempted to undermine the Parliamentary Budget Officer and the Auditor General by releasing their own contradictory report on the changes to old age security.

"Arms length auditors with no political motivation have been unequivocally clear. The Conservatives did not need to cut OAS and GIS. They are sustainable," said NDP Pensions Critic Irene Mathyssen. "This report is an underhanded attempt to justify an unnecessary and unpopular cut to the OAS."

IRENE MATHYSSEN, (London—Fanshawe, ON): Mr. Speaker, I have a petition from people across the country who are very concerned about the government's changes to old age security, because it will have a very negative impact on the poorest seniors in our country. In fact, changing the age of eligibility for OAS from 65 to 67 will cost each and every senior about $12,000 every year.

Irene Mathyssen London—Fanshawe, ON:

Mr. Speaker, it looks like the Conservatives are making a habit of attacking retirement security. Now it is the public sector pension plan that is in their sights, and just months after the Conservatives' reckless attacks on OAS. They are moving step by step to cut pensions and raise the retirement age for Canadians. People are justifiably worried and wonder whose pension the Conservatives are coming after next.

Ms. Irene Mathyssen (London—Fanshawe, NDP):  Mr. Speaker, the fact is that they are making cities pay the price for Conservative mismanagement. Shame on that minister.
